Nick Bullock - Guitar/Vocals
Nick Bullock's musical creativity reared its head rather late compared to
most. At the age of 16 Nick "borrowed" his little brother's brand new Squire
Strat-o-caster, and started banging on it with all the teenage angst he could
muster. He would eventually give it back a year later, when he bought his
prized Hohner se-35.
With guitar in hand he played along to albums such as The Grateful Dead's
"Live Dead," where anything you play will sound at least somewhat right. His
senior year of high school he was often found skipping classes to play guitar
under stairwells, and on more than one occasion received "JUG" for his
actions (Justice Under God...or detention with a tinge of the good old
catholic guilt trip).
It was at this time that Nick was asked to join his first band "Shoeless
Jim." After several weekends of rehearsing, they went out to play their
first graduation party. This was the pinnacle for Nick, all he had worked,
sweated and toiled for was unleashed on an audience of grandparents and small
cousins. The set swirled to a climactic stop with a smokin "Fire on the
Mountain," and just like that the gig was over. With twenty dollars in hand
and a smile on his face, Nick got a ride home from the drummer, who promptly
told him that the band didn't think it was working out.
It was a bitter pill to swallow, but Nick picked himself up, kept playing and
managed to pass the audition for Ithaca College's jazz guitar program. It was
at Ithaca under Steve Brown's guidance that Nick fell in love with writing
improvisational music. Four years of hard work later, Nick graduated with a
degree in jazz performance, and has been privately teaching theory,
composition, and guitar ever since.
Nick teaches private guitar, composition, and theory lessons in both the Ithaca and Rochester areas. If you're interested in lessons, you can email him here for more info.
